Sponge cake recipe for shaping

I'm starting to try and get a bit more adventurous with my cake making and shaping but I'm not sure what is the best sponge cake recipe to use. When I make a normal cake I tend to use a victoria sponge cake mix. However this can be too soft and can crumble easily if trying to shape too much so can end up in a bit of a mess.Anyone have any good recipes for something a bit firmer. I've done maddeira before but thought it was a bit dry in comparison. Not sure if this is just the way I cooked it though
